Abstract

At the end of this chapter you should be able to: 1. Identify what is meant by group identity and highlight the distinction between out-groups and in-groups. 2. Describe what is meant by social identity and appreciate the effect social identity has on the way in which we interact with other people. 3. Describe and evaluate some of the theories relating to aggressive behaviour, including psychoanalytic theories and learning theories. 4. Identify factors which may cause people to be aggressive including environmental and situational factors. 5. Evaluate the evidence linking violence on television and aggressive behaviour. 6. Describe and evaluate some theories and models which account for altruism and prosocial behaviour, including empathy-altruism models and arousal-cost reward models. 7. Describe Latané and Darley’s research into bystander behaviour and identify some of the factors which may inhibit people from helping.
