Abstract

This chapter begins with an analysis of the relationship between confirmation or confirmation work and religious identity, national heritage and civil society. It is suggested that civil society is one of the forms which more traditional understandings of national heritage should assume in democratic societies. It presents an overview of the insights and results from a recent study on confirmation work conducted in Austria, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland. The study included approximately 20.000 adolescents, in addition to the workers and, in some of the countries, the parents of the confirmands. It was designed and carried out as a comprehensive study covering as many different aspects of the field as possible (expectations and experiences, aims, materials used, organizational models). The chapter focuses on those aspects and results of the study that refer to the contribution of confirmation work to society. Keywords:civil; civil society; confirmation; national heritage; religious identity
