Abstract

The dipole moment of methyl formate in dilute benzene and carbon disulfide solution at 25 °C was determined. The obtained value for the dipole moment was compared with the measured value of β-butyrolactone derived from dilute benzene solution. It is concluded that the preferred configuration of methyl formate in CS2 solution does not correspond to that assumed by Pendred et al. in their calculations of spin-lattice proton relaxation times in methyl formate dissolved in CS2, but to that postulated by Curl, Jr. from microwave data.
