Abstract

In the article the author reveals the confessional prerequisites of the Polish uprising of 1863–1864, examines the position taken by the Orthodox clergy in relation to the rebels, discloses the signifi cance of this position for the scale and outcome of the event. He draws the conclusion regarding the inconsistency of the confessional policy of the empire in the western provinces, and stresses the signifi cant contribution of Orthodox priests to the suppression of the uprising.
