Abstract

The workshops (conferences) were held in Tromsø (1993) and Kaamanen (1994) each with about 70 participants. The main themes in Tromsø were "Reindeer - pastures and environment in the Barents Euro Arctic Region (BEAR)" and in Kaamanen "European Union (EU) and the Reindeer Husbandry in Fennoscandia".

Summary

Introduction

The number of semi-domestic reindeer in Finland has increased after the second world war. The increase of the number of reindeers and the decrease of the winter ranges together with the change from herding tofreegrazing has led to over-grazing of the lichen forests. The goal of the present study is to use satellite images to get information on the area and quality of reindeer pastures in selected reindeer herding districts. Fennoscandia, epidemiological data on the reindeer nose bot fly larvae are lacking This is the first comprehensive epidemiological study of this parasite in reindeer. It is an attempt to use the Iceland horse as a catalyser to change the viscious circle to which the Sami people have become a victim This is only possible if a comprehensive view is taken in which technique, economy, and culture are integrated. We will test new methods and points of view in order to solve specific problems and create new opportunities with the goal: Profitable reindeer herding on Nature's own terms
