Abstract

The conference on and Security in the Black Sea Region convened on September 13-14, 1996, in Istanbul. Under the auspices of the Center for International Studies and the Department of Political Science of Bogazici University, the conference was co-sponsored by: the International Organiza? tion for Migration, Geneva; the Open Society Institute, New York; the U.S. Information Agency, Istanbul Branch Office; the Bogazici University Foun? dation, Istanbul; the Marko Education Foundation, Istanbul. The conference was very successfully organized by Dr. Kemal Kiri?ci, who gathered on one side the major internationally well-known scholars in the field of migration and refugee issues, on the other side brought representatives from almost all neighboring countries around the conference table, namely Azerbai? jan, Russia, Georgia, Ukraine, Armenia, and Bulgaria. Among the leading researchers in the field, the conference was able to benefit from the delibera? tions and comments of Myron Weiner (MIT, U.S.), Jonas Widgren (Interna? tional Center for Migration Policy Development, Vienna) and John Maresca, former U.S. Ambassador to the CSCE and Senior Advisor to the Open Media Research Institute, Prag, as well as Martin W Sampson III from the University of Minnesota.
