Abstract

In 1948 the Rector of the University of Copenhagen invited the rectors of the Scandinavian (Norwegian, Swedish, Danish and Finish) universities to a meeting in Copenhagen to discuss questions of common interest and in particular, the possibility of extending Scandinavian co-operation in matters concerning the universities. The initiative thus taken by the University of Copenhaguen met with great interest, and it was decided to continue holding the meetings. In 1972, a meeting of the rectors of the Scandinavian universities was held in Uppsala, Sweden. Only as from 1981 have there been regular meetings. The co-operation of the rectors of the Scandinavian universities has thus been provided with a more fixed framework. In addition, the Conference of the Scandinavian Rectors has contact with the University in Iceland as well as with the Academy of the Faroe Islands.
