Abstract

Cardiac arrest (CA) affects about 50,000 subjects per year in France; it constitutes a major public health concern. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) of CA relies on specific international guidelines. Ventricular fibrillation is the main cause of CA, and prognosis depends on early defibrillation. International guidelines on CPR emphasize simplification of the procedures in order to facilitate the instruction of the general public, in particular, on these recommendations, and their application. Resuscitation includes basic CPR but also a specific organization called “survival chain” with emergency alert, basic CPR, defibrillation, and advanced CPR. New techniques and treatments are presented, regarding these guidelines either for basic or advanced CPR.
