Abstract

We find extrinsic conductivity of Ta-doped SnO2 electro-catalyst supports to be maximal at around 1% Ta-doping. Extrinsic conductivity is limited due to two effects: (i) limited dopant solubility due to thermodynamic competition with ternary oxides, and (ii) electron localization at the Ta center leading to collaborative Jahn-Teller distortions and a freezing out of the donor state with increasing dopant concentration.
