Abstract

Small particles of lithium dispersed in matrices of CO2 and xenon have been investigated using E.P.R. techniques. For the case of Li in a CO2 matrix we have found that interactions associated with the matrix material affect both the line-width and the position of the resonance transitions. Such effects are not observed when a xenon matrix is employed. Samples for which the particle size exceeded 1 000 A were characterized by a magnetic susceptibility which was independent of temperature. For smaller particles (e.g. 30 A), however, a transition temperature region was found in which the susceptibility changes from a Pauli susceptibility to one which varies as 1/T. These results are in agreement with previous theoretical predictions.
