Abstract

Modular multilevel converter (MMC) has been widely used in voltage source converter based high voltage direct current transmission (VSC-HVDC). The electromagnetic interference (EMI) caused by the plenty of power semiconductor devices in MMC may interfere with MMC itself and its surrounding electronic equipment. This paper presents a chaotic nearest level modulation (CNLM) method for the EMI suppression of MMC. The mechanism of the common-mode voltage (CMV) and difference-mode voltage (DMV) of MMC with nearest level modulation (NLM) are analyzed. Then, CNLM is firstly proposed to reduce the EMI at the source of MMC. The control period of CNLM changes chaotically within a given range. The energy of the peaks on EMI spectrum of MMC could be spread across the spectrum. Finally, the correctness and effectiveness of the EMI suppression method are validated by a 21-level MMC simulation.
