Abstract

This review summarizes conductometric studies on the ionic association and solvation processes of imidazolium ionic liquids with special regard to 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate [emim][BF4] and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate [bmim][BF4] in various molecular solvents and at various temperatures. It analyses available literature data on dilute solutions of ionic liquids. It also discusses the effect of temperature, solvent structure and properties, the cation and anion of the ionic liquid on the limiting molar conductivity and the ionic association, as well as ion transport processes and thermodynamic properties of ionic association.
