Abstract
s e11 tracking, stalking, chasing and manipulating prey. For domestic animals and pets, foraging or predation last mere minutes. Rapid feeding induces gastric hyper-acidity and a low ratio saliva/gastric secretion which can lead to physiological disorders. We tested a feeding device, the Pipolino , designed to increase the feeding time and effort of cats, dogs and horses. When food is delivered through a Pipolino , in more than 80% of cases, dogs and cats expressed a larger variety of behaviors prior to obtaining and processing food and they spend more time feeding than in control situations. Increasing the feeding time enhanced the proportion of saliva in the bolus, counterbalancing the deleterious effects of possible hyper-acidity. Eating slowly and spending more time in feeding activities likely results in improvement of well-being of dogs and cats.
