Abstract

Social acceptability of mining projects is a topic frequently addressed in scientific literature. But while vicious opposition can jeopardize the outcome of a project, a lack of opposition does not necessarily guarantee its success. The connections the mining company forms with the territory where it is established are very important in guaranteeing its sustainability. We will assess the complementarity of the two concepts, their social acceptability and territorial anchorage, and their importance in the implementation of mining projects. This will be illustrated by a case study: a new coal bed methane extraction project in France and how it translates in local strategic planning documents.
