Abstract
A sufficient condition for the linear relationship between the vertical and horizontal components of the time-varying geomagnetic field is that the primary field can be expressed as a linear sum of two fields, each of which has a consistent morphology. This is approximately fulfilled if local induction is predominant and the primary field is approximately horizontal.
