Abstract

The conditions for stability of the spin system at positive and negative absolute temperatures are discussed. It is concluded that a thermodynamical system may exist in an equilibrium state at negative absolute temperatures and the condition for stability of this system is connected with the positive (at positive absolute temperatures) or negative (at negative absolute temperatures) definition of the quadratic form delta 2E, which is the second variation of the internal energy.
