Abstract

This paper deals with the analysis and performance evaluation of XLPE insulated Underground High Voltage (HV) cable based on the Dielectric power factor (tan delta) measurements. The proposed setup is designed with a three-core 6.35/11kV XLPE (Cross-linked polyethylene) insulated, metallic screened cable. This test setup is designed, using a high voltage transformer for regulated power supply, heating arrangements with magnetic coils, temperature measuring sensors, and the XLPE cable. The cable under test is subjected to thermal stress and the dielectric power factor values are measured at ambient and at higher temperature levels. Tan delta measurements in an aged cable are also carried out at ambient temperature to present its significance. This study verifies the dielectric power factor measurement as a significant and reliable tool for diagnostic measurements for the condition assessment of the power cables.
