Abstract

Fatigue tests with constant ΔK and R were performed on specimens of 2024-T351 Al alloy. When fatigue crack growth starts in the (flat) tensile mode, shear lips soon develop if ΔK is high enough. The crack growth rate da/dN decreases during this process. Two models based on crack growth resistance by plastic deformation will be discussed to explain this phenomenon.
