Abstract

Automated systems for maintenance management of bridges require information on current and future needs for maintenance and repair actions. Often, this information is provided indirectly by condition ratings for bridge elements. This paper presents new condition states defined as stages of service life, notes the correspondence between new states and present-day condition ratings in US practice, outlines the use of field testing to identify condition states, reviews deterioration modeling for condition states, and notes a procedure for segmental inspection to capture quantities and locations of conditions.
