Abstract

The suggestion tht hydrated HSO/sub 3/ radicals can condense directly to produce sulfate particulates is examined. In particular the experiments of Leifer et al. are analyzed. It is concluded that the anomalously high rates of nucleation observed in these experiments is an artifact of the condensation nuclei counter method of detection-additional nuclei being produced in the counter itself. Other corroborating evidence in favor of the conventional condensation mechanism is presented. 1 figure.
