Abstract

Observations of condensation nuclei concentrations (Aitken nuclei) were made on board the Glomar Challenger during Mediterranean cruises in both 1970 and 1975. The data reveal number concentrations considerably greater than previously reported. The concentrations expected are about 1000–2000 cm −3 as opposed to open-ocean concentrations of about 400 cm −3 or less. The observed concentrations were significantly greater in 1975 than 1970 which may reflect increased industrial activity but other possible causes, such as different vegetative production of particles, cannot be ruled out.
