Abstract

The processing of engineering thermoplastics is frequently limited by the high melt viscosity of high molecular weight linear polymers. This limitation in the processing of engineering polymers could, in principle, be overcome by processing low viscosity macrocyclic oligomers which could be converted to high molecular weight polymer in a ring opening polymerization process. This approach has been largely unexplored due to the lack of a convenient and practical synthesis of such macrocyclic oligomers of condensation polymers without the use of high dilution techniques and prolonged reaction times.
