Abstract

Identifying athletes at risk for protracted recovery following a sport-related concussion (SRC) is an important part of concussion management. Consensus statements outline several factors that are purported to contribute to SRC recovery; however, many of these factors lack empirical support and warrant additional research. The purpose of this chapter is to (1) describe best practice for returning an athlete to play following SRC, (2) provide an overview of studies that examine SRC recovery, and (3) present empirical support for factors that predict prolonged recovery following SRC.
