Abstract

Abstract Contest competition shares properties with other types of competition which are more prevalent and have been more carefully studied in economic theory, but it also has some important differences. Some insights that have been developed are seemingly robust and these are collected also in the summary sections at the ends of the chapters. The fundamental role of heterogeneity of contestants and the discouragement effect in dynamic contests figure prominently in the theory of contests.
