Abstract

The UK exited the EU on 31 January 2020 and is no longer a member state. On Christmas Eve 2020, the UK and the EU agreed on the terms of their future relationship. With the entering into force of the Withdrawal Agreement and the Trade and Cooperation Agreement, the withdrawal procedure outlined in Article 50 TEU came to a conclusion. In a formal sense, Brexit was now over. The EU's process driven response to managing Brexit achieved its core objectives. The EU's response was united and effective and highlighted the benefits of membership. The Brexit experience taught the EU to bring its collective problem solving capacities to bear on internal and external challenges.
