Abstract

This chapter summarizes the analysis proposed in this book. The main proposal put forward is that various instances of Ellipsis such as Pseudogapping, VP Ellipsis, Gapping, Sluicing, and NP Ellipsis are derived by means of a combination of Focus movement (triggered by a Focus feature) and subsequent deletion (caused by an E-feature).This account of ellipsis allows a uniform treatment of several types of elliptical structure, leaving room for further phenomena that have not been discussed in this monograph. Furthermore, the analysis can be implemented in a phase-based syntactic framework: The domain of the phase is deleted after focused material has been moved out of the domain to the phase edge. Ellipsis is thus an instance of non-Spell-Out of syntactic structure
