Abstract

This chapter presents some concluding thoughts. The chapters in this volume have aimed to provide a review of the current state of neuroscience with respect to the use of brain-scanning devices to ‘read’ minds. Taken together, they should leave the reader well-informed, both about the current state of progress and about the many concerns that these developments raise, especially in relation to mental privacy. The rudimentary capabilities for ‘mindreading’ demonstrated by brain imaging technologies also raise important concerns for mental privacy. While future advances may not be as dramatic as pessimists have feared, these concerns will not be dispelled without an open and informed scientific and public debate.
