Abstract
It will not have escaped the attentive reader’s attention that this book examines almost exclusively prose works, rather than poetry, which may indeed come as a surprise given the significance of poetic production to both movements, particularly to Spanish American modernismo. The introductory chapter considers two short stories from Charles Baudelaire and Jose Asuncion Silva. Chapter 1 examines two philosophical essays or literary dialogues by Oscar Wilde, alongside some well-known essays by Walter Pater. Chapter 2 considers Jose Asuncion Silva’s only novel. Chapter 3 discusses a novel by Joris-Karl Huysmans. Chapter 4 analyzes three short stories by Ruben Dario. Chapter 5 explores two novels, one by Oscar Wilde, the other by Thomas Mann. Chapter 6 compares various chronicles and short stories by Manuel Gutierrez Najera and Julian del Casal. Given the fact that Silva, Dario, and Casal (not to mention Baudelaire, and to a lesser degree Gutierrez Najera) were known primarily as poets, it is indeed significant that I have chosen examples from their prose works. I wish to dedicate this concluding chapter to a discussion of some of the justifications for this decision as well as the varying consequences of it.
