Abstract
The book's central theme is how the history of the Guatemalan and Nicaraguan women's movements influenced their current approach to women's empowerment. It traces how several factors related to the armed conflict have over time influenced the development of the women's movement. The public protest and awareness-raising campaigns were complemented with a strong reliance on a rights-based approach. The book focuses on organizations - Actoras de Cambio, Kaqla and Q'anil - which developed an unconventional approach to women's empowerment. Juxtaposing the approach of mainstream feminist organizations with the work of feminist organizations adopting an experience-based approach which builds on corporeal and psychoanalytic feminism invites for a reflection on the concepts of empowerment and mobilization and for an assessment of the relevance thereof for other social-women's-organizations.
