Abstract

Empire is one of the most evocative words in the political vocabulary, suggesting as it does a wide range of political situations. In a general sense, it suggests some great territorial expanse, inhabited by a wide variety of peoples. More specifically, to the Greeks, empire meant the vast reaches of the Persian Empire. To later generations of Europeans, empire could mean Roman rule over the known world, a vision of Roman legionnaires marching across the Mediterranean littoral, bringing all they encountered under imperial domination. To the biblically inclined, empire recalled the series of great powers that marked the stages of God’s plan for mankind.
