Abstract
This is the second time that I have been asked to make the concluding remarks at a Royal Society Discussion Meeting on enzyme mechanisms. The first occasion was in 1966, shortly after D. C. Phillips and his colleagues had solved the structure of the first enzyme, lysozyme, in the Davy Faraday Laboratory at the Royal Institution. It was also the first time that anyone had been able to interpret the catalytic mechanism of an enzyme in stereochemical terms.
