Abstract

This article examines the effects of changes in work on family life in France, based on recent research on this subject. The difficulties addressed in this article are mainly related to changes, less those related to the actual working conditions on which research is lacking but more those related to work organization and more specifically to the organization of work time. Numerous assessments of difficulties in balancing work and family refer to the intensity of temporal constraints linked to the sectors of activity, family situation and living standard. Balancing work and family life will be examined mainly from the perspective of time management associated with these two activities since this process is caught between negotiation within the family (sharing of responsibilities), negotiation related to work time arrangement and access to day care resources.
