Abstract

Professor Gallino’s explanation of the downsizing of the European social model presupposes a conceptual endowment which here is resumed under two key headings: the “double movement” of marketization and de-marketization, as theorized by Polanyi in The Great Transformation; the “performativity” of economics as conceptually developed especially by Callon and Mackenzie. When used together they deploy their heuristic potentiality and contribute to the understanding both of the massive attack inferred to the European social model and the difficulty to effectively contrasting its downsizing by theoretical and especially political responses, as expressed in Gallino’s vivid reconstruction.
