Abstract

At the symposium on Wang Ch'uan-shan held in Changsha, the majority believed that Ch'uan-shan's views on nature were materialist, and there was very little dispute. Nevertheless, when it came to his historical outlook, there were highly divergent opinions. Some deemed that he was an idealist; others held that he was a materialist. Some said that although he was an idealist, there were nevertheless materialist factors; still others viewed his materialism as adulterated with idealism. What kind of approach should one take? In point of fact, if he were an idealist thinker, it became patent that his historical outlook would not be materialist. This is then rather simple. However, what we are discussing now is a materialist thinker. If you say that his historical outlook was of an idealist nature, this would be a depreciation of his materialism, thereby betraying a lack of respect for this great teacher.
