Abstract

The accelerated industrial development of the eastern regions of the nation is an important trend in the distribution of the productive forces and in improving the territorial structure of social production. In the postwar years an immense effort has been made to develop Siberia and the Far East economically, hundreds of new enterprises have been built, and new territorial-production complexes have been created. Between 1950 and 1970 the production of electric power in these regions has increased 12.8-fold; oil - 56.5-fold; natural gas - 110-fold; iron ore - 5.8-fold; cast iron - 3.8-fold; and steel - 2.7-fold. The chemical industry has undergone substantial development, and heavy machine and tractor building have been created from the ground up. Light industry and the food industry have been further developed.
