Abstract
In this issue celebrating Sir Ivor Richardson's career, the author considers the various role of lawyers and the choices they have to make in playing those roles. The first choice for a lawyer relates to the statement of the question to be addressed: what is the question? The second choice concerns the material considered by lawyers in playing their different roles. The third choice is about the principles and values which influence developments in the law and social policy. The fourth choice is about answers, which is held by legislators and their advisers. The fifth choice is the process governing the application of substantive law, including sanctions for its breach. The author concludes by emphasising the role of the academic lawyer, as they have advantages in all of the above areas.
