Abstract

Building Information Modelling (BIM) or also known as "disruptive technology" is an emerging technology tool utilized in a construction project to integrate and enhance collaboration and productivity among diverse organisations in a whole project cycle. Currently in Malaysia, BIM can be trusted as one of the approaches to drive the Construction 4.0 Strategic Plan and complement the thrust productivity of the Construction Industry Transformation Programme (CITP) towards achieving the Shared Prosperity Vision (SPV) 2030 in.order to elevate the involvement of the national construction industry with emerging technologies through collaborations within the industry players and stakeholders. However, Malaysia’s construction industry has a slower adaption of BIM implementation where the acceptance of BIM is still not wide ranging and fully adopted among the construction players. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to identify the current existing practices towards BIM implementation and determine the readiness criteria of BIM implementation in order to develop the conceptual framework of readiness for BIM implementation among construction organisations for Pulau Pinang case study. A systematic literature review (SLR) was conducted to identify and review a set of attributes for the current existing practices and readiness criteria for BIM implementation among construction organisation in the project. Subsequently, a set of questionnaire survey was designed and distributed among 36 respondents consists of construction organisations players from four (4) selected of case study projects. The data collected was analyzed using ranking analysis based on mean and standard deviation values. The results reveled that most of respondents emphasized that in the current existing practices for BIM implementation in the BIM projects are influenced by the main attributes including people, management, process and application of technology. Meanwhile, the main readiness criteria for implementing BIM among organisations can be classified into four main components which comprised of key attributes as follows: (1) management, (2) process, (3) technology and (4) people. All of these components and key attributes have been ranked according to their priority based on results of mean values. Finally, all the findings are consolidated to develop a conceptual framework of readiness for BIM implementation among construction organisations practice. This proposed conceptual framework can be adopted by all construction players and the government sector as an additional reference to enhance the effectiveness of the existing guidelines provided before ensuring towards better project quality and performance of construction project.
