Abstract

This chapter argues that current attempts to integrate sustainability goals into a social innovation context must avoid being overly instrumental and focusing only on indicators and valuation metrics that do not capture the complex and systemic nature of the couplings between social innovation processes on the one hand and (processes of) sustainability transformation on the other hand. We introduce the concept of ‘transformative social innovation’ as a suitable way of analysing the interactions of social innovation initiatives with the dynamics of sustainability transformations. Using this concept, this chapter explores the nexus of social innovation and societal transformation, conceptualised specifically in terms of sustainability transformations.
