Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the conceptual modelling of Belief, Desire and Intention (BDI) Agents within an Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS). A two stage modelling process is presented during which a combination of existing modelling techniques are employed. Initially an overall analysis and functional decomposition of the complex ITS is performed using recognized modelling procedures from the area of object oriented software engineering. Finally, the BDI agents’ state (belief, desire, intention, goals and plans) are modelled using techniques particular to the area of agent oriented software engineering. Epistemic and modal logic are employed as a modelling language. Specific attention is paid to the modelling and observations of social interactions among Intelligent Agents (IA) in the ITS.
