Abstract

An analysis of economic geography papers at the International Geographical Congress in Moscow finds some common ground between Soviet and Western work. Increasing sociological orientation of economic geography research is found to give rise to a new type of socio-economic geography, which it is suggested should replace the current designation of the discipline. The old issue of whether geography should be considered a unified discipline appears to have been laid to rest by what the authors perceive as Western acceptance of two subsystems in geography–physical and economic. This, however, should not rule out a rapprochement between the subsystems in the resolution of common problems. Regional geography is considered a superfluous subfield on the ground that all geography has a regional focus. In fact, it is suggested that geography become the core discipline of a new system of regional sciences.
