Abstract

The report is intended to focus attention on methods or concepts to be used by designers to achieve an optimal design of complex systems. Generic aspects of the optimal system design are presented including component redundancy, diversity, separation, and isolation. Results of an analytical investigation of component redundancy in three specific design options of a shutdown heat removal system and its effect on unavailability are also presented.
