Abstract

Among the tokamaks in the world, Damavand tokamak is one of the small ones and, regarding the features of its plasma, offers useful and important research fields among which the neutral beam plasma heating facilities design is one of the most conspicuous ones. One of the most important sections of a neutral beam injector is the ion source in which ions are produced for the first time. Conceptual design of ion source for heating neutral beam injector of the Damavand tokamak is presented in the paper. Ion beam energy, beam power and beam current required for heating of Damavand tokamak plasma were determined. Different types of suitable ion sources for the neutral beam injection were considered and the magnetic multiple bucket ion source was chosen. Parameters of the multiple bucket ion source were obtained. It is shown that, taking the tokamak parameters and the amount of beam absorption into consideration, the ion source must deliver an ion beam with 4.5keV, 30±1.5kW and 6.7A, which are critical energy, ion beam power and current respectively, required for Damavand tokamak.
