Abstract
AbstractThe conceptual design of a multiple input multiple output (MIMO) antenna system packaged within a metallic handset for future wireless communications is proposed, simulated, and implemented. The presented MIMO antenna system is composed of four‐identical slotted microstrip magnetic dipoles. The whole antenna system is installed within an emulated handset with a metallic back cavity and frames. A few antenna prototypes are fabricated and measured to validate the conceptual design. Owning to the inherent microstrip magnetic dipole configuration, the packaged MIMO antenna system exhibits a good impedance matching, a high element isolation, an acceptable average radiation efficiency of about 40%, and a wide beam coverage performance at 3.5 GHz‐band. Compared to conventional single input single output (SISO) wireless communication systems, the channel capacity can be nearly tripled by employing the designed MIMO handset.
