Abstract

Introduction: Population ageing in Brazil has been occurred in an accelerated way, becoming a complex phenomenon that demands a multidisciplinary understanding regarding health care for this population. It is therefore essential to understand the needs and main challenges in the health care of the elderly. Purpose: This quantitative-qualitative research aimed to know the conceptions, knowledge and perceptions of university students about old age, ageing and care towards the health care of the elderly. Methods: Participated students regularly enrolled in the courses of the health area of the University of Franca (Biomedicine, Physical Education, Nursing, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Speech Therapy, Medicine, Nutrition, Dentistry, Psychology, Radiology). The students answered a questionnaire made available on the Blackboard platform, containing twenty-four questions, open and closed. The data obtained through the closed questions follow the likert scale model and are in the statistical treatment phase. The open questions will be analyzed and later categorized in the light of the Content Analysis, following the criterion of the answers’ saturation. It is understood that knowing the university students' perception about the elderly and the ageing process can contribute to the correction of distortions and prejudices, helping to understand the needs of this life cycle phase, besides promoting researches about the elderly and their needs.
