Abstract

AbstractThis Chapter introduces the topic of community resilience as it applies to disasters and the relevant background for the research studies presented in this Book. Due to the variability, the definitions of community resilience in the scientific literature provide a wide scope of potential applications in practice. However, nine common elements, derived from past studies, can further inform community resilience and its effect on the likely harmful security and health outcomes caused by disasters, such as the psychological, social, and economic impact in a community. The nine community resilience elements found were: local knowledge, community networks and relationships, communication, health, governance and leadership, resources, economic investment, preparedness, and mental outlook. This Chapter sets the stage for research studies discussed in this Book, which explores these components and community resilience further in the United Kingdom to reduce harmful security and health outcomes caused by severe floods.KeywordsCommunity resilienceDisastersDisaster preparednessDisaster risk reductionEmergency managementPublic healthGlobal healthOperationalizationCommunity practice
