Abstract

Abstract An economical, ecological version of the gas nitriding process is presented. It allows a substantial reduction in the consumption of industrial gases compared with currently used processes. Also it leads to a simplification of nitriding installation as well as the process itself, while allowing maintenance of full control over the kinetics of the layer growth. The concept was developed from studies of the thermodynamics and kinetics of growth of nitrided layers on iron and steel. It has been verified in trials under industrial conditions.
