Abstract

Abstract Up to this point, research methods for enhancing computer security have concentrated on offline risk management Only few attempts emphasize online risk management adapting to the rapidly changing threats of complex distributed systems. The security manager of such a distributed system requires online support for assessing the actual risks and for selecting and implementing cost effective security measures. Our paper describes the concept of a security control center that will execute online risk management effectively. The security control center applies mathematical models for the refmement of information obtained from two major sources: risk relevant data already available in the system and judgements from human experts. This refined information provides the basis for risk assessment models which in turn deliver input for decision support models. We called our approach of loosely coupled modeling open modeling . In addition, a comfortable user interface with graphic representation to support the security manager is essential.
