Abstract

Uranium secondary mineralization occurs within a series of exploratory tunnels excavated for Fe and Mn ores at Gabal Allouga, West Central Sinai. The mineralizations are associated with carbonaceous clay, siltstone and ferruginated sandstone lithologies belonging to the middle member of Um Bogma Formation, lower Carboniferous. Radiation surveys and measurements indicated the presence of high working levels (WL) at 8 stations that may present occupational working hazards in these tunnels. The WL range is between 0.61 and 2.27 with an average of 1.06 WL. Most of the stations with the highest radon-gas accumulations are located off the naturally ventilated parts of the tunnels network. It is concluded that the distribution of the Rn-gas and daughters concentrations are controlled by the natural ventilation conditions in the tunnels.
