Abstract

The concentrations of copper, iron, lead nickel and zinc in algal blooms from freshwater areas near zinc smelting wastes in the Lower Swansea Valley have been compared with metal levels in algae and waters from areas outside the valley. The metal concentrations of the blooms are considered with respect to: (i) their nature and origin; (ii) metal levels in the water and (iii) algal uptake and concentration factors. It is concluded that most of the differences in algal metal content are related to environmental effects. The measurement of metal concentrations in freshwater algae to indicate the presence of environmental metal is discussed and a monitoring technique outlined.
