Abstract

Due to the moderate weather of this area where the temperature ranges from 10 to 35 degrees and the humidity is mild, it is considered a suitable area for growing grains such as wheat, barley and oats. The first two are consumed mainly by humans whereas the oats are primarily used as livestock fodder, because of this reason oats are grown widely in the area extending from Al-Marge to El-Bayda and covers an area of nearly 100 km long and almost 10 – 15 km wide, with an average of . Oats are grown as a cool season crop in Mediterranean and tropical areas. It grows on a wide range of soils at temperatures ranging from 5 to 26°C. The water needed for irrigation in this area is mainly from the rain and underground water. The soil in this area is formed by rock decomposition through the influences of atmospheric phenomenon. The soil is of a high clay content and contains relatively more humus and more plant aliments. Studies such as establishing radiological maps requires knowledge of plant uptake in this region. The sampling sites where chosen as they used for growing oats and barley, the sites are shown in figure (1).
